Winter Quarter 2013 starts Wednesday, January 2nd. NeLSC staff will be available for questions on Monday December 31.  Your ANGEL and Canvas accounts will be accessible the Friday before the quarter starts.  Because of the holiday your instructor may not have your course open until the first day of the quarter.

Fall Quarter is winding down and your friends at North's e-Learning Support Center are looking forward to the New Year with anticipation.

 NeLSC will be offering a new and exciting virtual classroom called Canvas.  It is student centric and offers students many avenues to access their classes.  Mobile devices are more widely supported and you determine how you will receive notifications of class activity.
Currently there will be offered a limited selection of courses using this new software and as we move into the year each quarter we will offer more classes using Canvas.

Mobile Devices – Applications used with Teaching

Join us for a hands-on workshop that focuses on current uses of mobile devices in education.  Learn about the faculty iPad loan program here at North where iPads are being made available for short term check out.  Though it’s not required, you’re welcome to bring your own device for Socrative demo.  Socrative is a free online student polling tool.  You can quiz your students on-the-fly with any device they bring in to your classroom.

Focus: Canvas Orientation for Pilot Phase I (Winter)

This is an introduction to Canvas for the Winter 2013 Pilot Phase I cohort.  The session starts with a quick demonstration of Canvas. We’ll move on to explain how the Canvas approach differs from ANGEL and what that means for your online course design, development and delivery.  We anticipate seats will be open and available to all who are interested in joining the Pilot Phase II (Spring 2013) cohort.

ANGEL Online Training Sequence

Focus: Orientation for ANGEL Training required before teaching online

This is a self-paced, mandatory online training sequence for instructors who plan to use ANGEL with their classrooms. This is the initial orientation, available 1:1 as well. All sessions are available online and accessed when you need it and completed at your own pace.  It’s recommended that you will have completed the training within 5 weeks.  The training listed as 15 hours but may take more or less time depending upon your familiarity with technology.  An in-person wrap up will culminate with you receiving your class shell and certificate of completion!

New Technologies on the Horizon to Educate Students

In September, NSCC joined in the District’s 2012 e-Learning Summer Institute to provide about 30 faculty with a jump-start on emerging technologies, quality standards and strategies driving e-education in the coming year.  NSCC’s learning management system training (in ANGEL and soon Canvas) for faculty is now designed to be modular, self-paced and stream-lined to expedite effective use across the entire curriculum.  Concurrently, strong efforts have been initiated to increase students’ learning access and success by reducing the costs of text materials in all courses (data are being compiled) through use of open educational resources and by working with publishers to customize textbooks.  Again in coordination with colleges across our District, NSCC is instituting a system and policy to put mobile devices (like iPads), “LiveScribe” smartpens, SoftChalk assessment builders and other “disruptive classroom technologies” in the hands of faculty to encourage new avenues of exploration and utilization to reach more students in our community.
